Instructor led activities

Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre is fully licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) (Licence number L13180, expiry 20th December 2019) to deliver a wide variety of instructor-led activities, both on site and throughout the Peak District. The AALA framework of inspection and validation provides assurance for group leaders.  Working with your group or school, we will develop a programme of activities which meets your needs.

We have a long established reputation as a safe and effective licensed provider of adventurous activities.  We are able to deliver quality outdoor education to young people, whilst ensuring we assess and manage risk.

All of the freelance instructors have worked with us for many years.  They are  very experienced, hold multiple national governing body awards, and are engaged in continuing professional development. Their range of skills and expertise allow them to offer the full range of outdoor activities to groups that are based at Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre.

No group is the same, so the programme is tailored to make sure that the mix of activities provided meets your learning and development objectives and fits with any programme content that school staff want to lead during the visit. Naturally the work is mainly outdoors but Lockerbrook Farm can also offer bespoke team development and team work indoors to meet group needs.

We will provide all the risk assurance documentation you require and meet all regulatory requirements of schools and groups, so you can be confident that all activities, although adventurous and challenging, are safe and risk assessed appropriately.

STREAM SCRAMBLING

Stream Scrambling as an activity on its own or as part of an adventurous walk this active and energetic (and wet!) activity involves a journey up or down a mountain stream. This is a very popular activity but weather dependent, as even in the summer streams are very cold.

CANOEING, KAYAKING & RAFTING

Canoeing, kayaking and raft building – Contact us to discuss your options involving these adventurous water sports.  Please note that although we can include water sports into a programme, these will incur additional costs.

HILL WALKING

Hill Walking – Our location provides a perfect jump off point for stunning hill walks through open moorland – crisscrossed by steep cloughs, woodland and valleys. We have easy access to the two great moorland plateaus of Kinder and Bleaklow and an adventurous walk over this ground can, when conditions are suitable, be matched with a stream scramble.

ROCK HOPPING & WEASELLING

Rock hopping / Weaselling – Higger Tor’s dramatic landscape of grit stone boulders provides the perfect location for traversing challenging tunnels, passages, scrambles and squeezes.

BUSHCRAFT

Just imagine foraging for your own dead wood, using tools to chop this up and then creating your own fire using a spark!  Bushcraft is about learning how to work with nature using the resources you find in a sustainable way

SEARCH & RESCUE

Search and Rescue – Perfect for the whole group and we are happy to team up with teachers and group leaders to help us deliver this half day search and rescue simulation. We teach participants stretcher use (we have our own rescue stretcher), first aid and search planning. They then plan their role and present back to the whole group. We then go out on to the moor to find our “casualty” (one of your group), rescue them, give them first aid and then carry them to safety. We follow this with a whole group evaluation

CLIMBING & ABSEILING

Abseiling – Towering grit stone edges (a unique characteristic of our National Park) provide varied abseils with descents ranging from modest to the more challenging. Groups routinely use a viaduct where adventurous descents over the river Wye are possible. We are also able to do an introduction to abseiling indoors at the centre which provides an ideal preparation for the more challenging descents in the National Park. This can also be offered to groups with special needs.

Climbing – The Peak District grit stone edges attract top climbers who use the routes to hone skills and push harder grades. Among those higher grades are numerous climbs that can give your group their first experience of a top rope climb or advance you to leading a climb for the first time. Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre has a climbing wall on site which can be used to familiarize groups with harness use, rope work and peer belaying. The wall provides excellent preparation for a trip to Burbage or Stannage edges close by.

CRATE STACK CHALLENGE

Crate stack challenge – Working in our wood adjacent to the centre, see how high you can build a tower before watching it tumble!

TEAM CHALLENGES

Co-operative team challenges – Our organization (the Woodcraft Folk) works to cooperative principles and we extend this ethos to our problem solving challenges outdoors. Groups complete tasks with emphasis on co-operation, team work, engagement and skill sharing. We do this outdoors in all weathers and aim to bring this ethos and learning back with us to the centre.

MOUNTAIN & TRAIL CYCLING

Mountain and trail cycling – Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre is situated on one of the most popular Peak District mountain bike routes and we have easy access to the miles of trails in the Derwent Valley below us. Even relatively inexperienced groups can circumnavigate the reservoirs below us on easy going trails with a wealth of local history – the huge dams themselves are of “Dambuster” fame.

ORIENTEERING

Orienteering – We have a number of orienteering courses at Lockerbrook and in the land around us. Some of these can be led by school staff or group leaders. The differing levels allow you to introduce step by step the key skills for orienteering and navigation.

CAVING & MINE EXPLORATION

Caving and mine exploration – Caving offers a unique experience exploring the depths underground in limestone caves (both active and fossil) and disused mine systems. For those going underground for the first time a half day is a good introduction to caving and for the more experienced we can offer more in depth training and adventure.
