Duke of Edinburgh camping at Lockerbrook Farm, in the heart of the Peak District
Our D of E campsite is open from the end of March until the end of October.
We normally only provide unsupported (no vehicle) camping facilities for young people on expedition working towards their Gold, and sometimes Silver awards. We will take up to 25 children if from one panel, school or organisation. If more than one panel wishes to use the field at the same time we normally restrict it to 5 children from each school or panel.
Sometimes we can support Bronze groups and we can normally accommodate visiting leaders or assessor’s vehicles but only by prior arrangement.
The cost for 2019 is £5pppn.
How to Book
We only take advance bookings. Check the availability calendar below, and if you find a date that suits you, please complete our booking enquiry form. If another group is already booked on the date you are interested in, please contact us anyway, as we may be able to accommodate you depending on the group sizes. We will confirm by your booking by email.
Charges for 2019 are £5 per person per night. Payment is made on the day to either the staff at the office (situated in the ground floor of the cottage at the south end of the site) or in the honesty box situated above the washing up sinks. Please put all payments for your group in one stamp addressed envelope with your contact details on and a receipt will be sent out. We can take payment by BACS – please request an invoice on your booking form. Or you can pay by cheque – please make cheque payable to ‘Lockerbrook’ and put group name and date on the back of the cheque.
Where is Lockerbrook?
Lockerbrook Farm can be found just over a mile up a track from the A57 Snake Pass between Sheffield and Manchester, looking down on Ladybower Reservoir.
The track is accessed from the only crossroads on the A57 (turn right from Sheffield and left from Manchester) and is signposted “Lockerbrook Farm Centre”. You drive up through Rowlee Farm past the farmhouse on your left and the barn on your right. You come to the first of two wooden gates (always to be shut after you pass through please) which says “Lockerbrook Farm 1 mile”. Just continue to follow the track and you will get to us. The DofE camping field is just past the centre car park on the right of the track, over the stile.
The best map to find us on is Ordnance Survey Sheet OL1 “The Peak District, Dark Peak Area”.
Our grid reference is SK165894
What facilities are available?
We have a campers toilet and sink (for personal washing) accessible through the bottom gate from the field. There are no showers on site. There is also a pot-washing sink and tap in a shelter just across the car park and through the top centre gate.
Terms and conditions of use
- The camping field is attached to Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre which is booked separately by other groups. The facilities in the centre are for the sole use of the group hiring the centre and not available for DofE groups. DofE groups should avoid the courtyard of the centre when going to the toilet or camper sink.
- The car park adjacent to the centre is for the sole use of any group hiring the centre. However, there is limited parking before Lockerbrook Farm just before the Locker Brook goes under the track. Please use this lay by for parking. Of course, if you need to drop anything off at the field then do drive up to it, but move the vehicle back to the lay-by when you have off loaded.
We do advise leaders with vehicles to contact us in advance to be sure that we can arrange parking for you.
